Ah, International Beer Day! The first Friday of August gives us a great excuse to gather our favourite people, crack open a cold one and enjoy some of the finer things in life. Whether you’re a lager fan or prefer real ale, why not bring everyone together by organising a taste testing of everyone’s favourite pints and pies? And for those who don’t like beer, you can be creative with an alternative tipple!
What’s the main difference between ale and lager?
Firstly, let’s look at the difference between ales and lagers. Ales are full-bodied and slightly bitter, which is why some ales are referred to as “bitter”. The yeast, combined with a shorter, higher temperature fermentation process and the addition of bitter hops creates this particular taste. Ales originate in the Middle Ages, while lagers probably originate in the 19th century. Lagers, sometimes called Pilsners if they have more hops, on the other hand are fermented for longer and at lower temperatures; space issues can make it harder for smaller breweries to store them while they ferment.
The Perfect Pairing: Steak and Ale Pie
And, what pairs better with a good beer than a mouth-watering pie — especially our irresistible Steak and Ale Pie? Try our new and improved recipe, featuring Cheriton Porter from our friends at Hampshire’s award-winning Flower Pots Brewery. There's something very special about top quality, tender steak that’s been slow-cooked in a carefully selected ale. Crafted from beef sourced as locally as possible to the bakery, the ale maximises the flavour from the meat's natural juices, which, when wrapped in our buttery pastry, makes our Steak and Ale Pie one of our bestsellers.
A Feast with Friends
International Beer Day is all about good times! Imagine the sun setting, the sound of laughter filling the air and a bunch of friends… Your table is set with a variety of craft ales and lagers, each one bringing its unique character to the party. In the centre, a stack of our golden Steak and Ale Pies is ready to be shared out.
Whether you’re a fan of pale ales, lagers, IPAs, or rich, dark stouts, there’s a beer out there that’ll complement the flavours of our Steak and Ale Pie perfectly. The malty sweetness of a brown ale melds with the gravy, while a hoppy IPA can cut through the richness of the pastry, giving a striking contrast.
